Re: Newark Fire Department’s May 2024 new recruit graduation ceremony Council Member Carlos M. Gonzalez expressed his dissatisfaction that the Administration chose not to extend an invitation to the Municipal Council for the recent graduation ceremony for the new Newark firefighter’s recruits. In addition, there were discussion regarding the administration’s continuing oversight in scheduling public ceremonies and events at the same time as Council meetings. As you are aware, the official Council’s meeting dates are schedule and published on the Municipal calendar in January. It is possible that the failure to include the Governing Body in the graduation ceremony was an honest oversight. However, moving on the Governing Body is hopeful the Administration will become more cognizant and accepting that City governance is a shared responsibility between both the legislative and executive branches, with each treated with mutual respect.
